1. Overview
The demand for online education in psychology is rapidly increasing in Pakistan, with significant market potential for a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (BS Psychology) program. Currently, very few universities offer this program online, presenting an opportunity for COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) to fill this gap. The program can aim for both local and international recognition and accreditation, broadening its reach and revenue streams by attracting a diverse student base, including overseas students. Furthermore, the curriculum can be designed to address the growing mental health needs of society and align with contemporary trends in psychological education and practice.
Psychology as a discipline has become increasingly relevant in addressing global and local challenges, including mental health crises, organizational efficiency, and educational development. A BS Psychology degree prepares graduates for a wide range of careers, including clinical psychology, educational psychology, organizational psychology, and research. Graduates can work in diverse roles, such as school counselors, clinical assistants, HR specialists, rehabilitation therapists, research associates, and educators. The national and international job market has shown a consistent demand for psychology professionals, driven by increased awareness of mental health and the need for psychological expertise in various sectors.
There are compelling reasons for launching the BS Psychology program via Open and Distance Learning (ODL). CUI’s established systems and processes, along with its strong reputation in the education sector, make the program highly feasible. The flexibility offered by ODL ensures accessibility for students from remote and underserved regions, mid-career professionals, and international learners. Moreover, the program aligns with CUI’s mission to provide innovative, inclusive, and quality education.
Key stakeholders for the program include potential employers, such as hospitals, educational institutions, counseling centers, rehabilitation facilities, research organizations, and government and non-government organizations (NGOs). Additional stakeholders include COMSATS University Islamabad, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), CUI Virtual Campus employees, students, and regulatory bodies. While challenges such as competition from other universities and technological barriers may arise, CUI’s strong brand name, established infrastructure, and expertise in ODL delivery provide a competitive edge. This program represents an excellent opportunity for CUI to expand its educational offerings, address societal needs, and develop a workforce equipped to meet the demands of an evolving psychological landscape.
